The Butcher of Bareilly: How Kuldeep Kumar Gangwar Killed 9 Women in 14 Months

The women of Bareilly were disappearing. For over a year, fear gripped the villages. Between June 2023 and July 2024, nine women were found dead in sugarcane fields. Their bodies lay hidden among the tall stalks, their lives cruelly stolen by an unseen hand. The killer moved like a ghost, striking and vanishing without a trace. At first, the police thought these were isolated cases: a robbery gone wrong, a personal dispute, or an accident. But as the pattern emerged, a terrifying realization spread: a serial killer was on the loose. He had a signature strangulation, with the knots always tied to the left. He killed with precision, leaving behind no clues, no evidence. The people of Bareilly lived in fear, locking their doors before nightfall, whispering about the murderer who walked among them. Then, in July 2024, the police caught a man: Kuldeep Kumar Gangwar. When questioned, he simply smiled and confessed, "I killed six." But if he admitted to six, who killed the other thr...

The Most Infamous Stories from the Dark Web

The dark web has always carried an air of mystery. While most of us stick to the regular internet browsing social media, reading news, or shopping online but there’s a hidden layer of the web that operates outside the boundaries of normal search engines. This hidden layer, known as the dark web, is infamous for its association with illegal activities and chilling stories that sound straight out of a crime novel. In this blog, we’ll dive into some of the most infamous tales from the dark web including the ones that have shocked the world and made headlines.

1. The Silk Road: The Dark Web’s First Mega Marketplace

In 2011, the Silk Road emerged as a revolutionary online marketplace. Think of it as Amazon, but for illegal goods. Created by Ross Ulbricht, under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts," Silk Road offered everything from drugs to fake IDs. It operated on the Tor network and used Bitcoin to keep transactions anonymous.
For two years, Silk Road became the hub of the dark web’s economy. It reportedly facilitated over $1 billion in transactions before the FBI took it down in 2013. Ross Ulbricht was arrested in a San Francisco library and sentenced to life in prison. This case became a landmark moment, sparking debates about online privacy, personal freedom, and the ethics of anonymity on the internet.

2. AlphaBay: Bigger, Bolder, and More Dangerous

After the fall of Silk Road, AlphaBay took the throne. Launched in 2014, it quickly became the largest darknet marketplace, selling everything from drugs and hacking tools to counterfeit documents and stolen data. By 2017, it was ten times bigger than Silk Road. But AlphaBay’s success didn’t last. In July 2017, its creator Alexandre Cazes was arrested in Thailand.
Authorities seized millions in assets, including luxury cars and cryptocurrency. Tragically, just days after his arrest, Cazes was found dead in his jail cell, it was kind of an apparent suicide. AlphaBay’s takedown was a major victory for law enforcement, but it also showed how rapidly these markets could evolve.

3. Hitman Websites: Reality or Scam?

The idea of hiring a hitman online sounds like something from a Hollywood movie, but the dark web has made it a chilling possibility. Websites claiming to offer assassination services have cropped up, with some even providing price lists for their services. One of the most infamous was Besa Mafia. However, investigative reports revealed that it was a scam. People paid thousands of dollars in Bitcoin, but no hits were ever carried out. Despite being fraudulent, these websites’ existence highlights the dark web’s eerie ability to exploit human desperation.

4. The Love Zone: A Horrific Network

Some of the darkest corners of the dark web involve crimes against children. The Love Zone (TLZ) was one such network, where users shared explicit material involving minors. In 2022, a global investigation led to the arrest of Ashley Paul Griffith, an Australian childcare worker and active contributor to TLZ. Griffith’s crimes were horrifying. He was found guilty of abusing 69 children and sharing his actions online. His arrest and subsequent sentencing to life imprisonment highlighted the ongoing battle law enforcement faces against such dark web networks.

5. The Ashley Madison Scandal: A Leak That Shook Lives

In 2015, the infamous Ashley Madison breach revealed just how dangerous the dark web could be for stolen data. Ashley Madison was a site designed for extramarital affairs, promising users complete discretion. But when a group of hackers called "The Impact Team" infiltrated their database, they released the personal information of over 32 million users on the dark web. The fallout was massive. The leak caused public humiliation, ended marriages, and reportedly led to suicides. The Ashley Madison breach wasn’t just a scandal; it was a grim reminder of how vulnerable our personal information can be.

6. Small-Time Drug Operations: The Crawfords’ Story

Not every dark web drug ring involves massive cartels. Some stories, like that of Matthew and Nicole Crawford, show how ordinary people can use the dark web to run small-scale operations. The Crawfords sold THC-laced vape cartridges and edibles through dark web marketplaces, accepting cryptocurrency as payment. Their business unraveled when Australian police raided their home, discovering kilos of THC products. Matthew was sentenced to prison, while Nicole received a more lenient sentence. Their case serves as a cautionary tale about how easily the dark web can lure people into illegal activities.

7. Human Trafficking: The Dark Web’s Most Disturbing Reality

Perhaps the most heartbreaking use of the dark web is in human trafficking. Hidden forums and marketplaces have been used to buy and sell individuals for exploitation. While law enforcement has made strides in cracking down on these networks, the anonymity of the dark web makes it an ongoing challenge. In recent years, advances in technology have helped authorities identify and rescue victims. However, the stories of those who suffer remain a haunting reminder of the dark web’s potential for evil.

8. Cyber Extortion: The Dark Overlord

The hacking group "The Dark Overlord" made headlines for their brazen cyber extortion schemes. They stole sensitive data from businesses and organisations, demanding ransoms to keep the information private. In one case, they leaked unreleased episodes of Netflix’s "Orange Is the New Black" after the company refused to pay up. The Dark Overlord also targeted hospitals and schools, threatening to release confidential records. Their actions underscored the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for stronger cybersecurity measures.

The Duality of the Dark Web

The dark web is a paradox. On one hand, it provides a space for free speech in oppressive regimes and protects whistleblowers. On the other hand, it’s a breeding ground for some of the internet’s darkest activities. From marketplaces like Silk Road and AlphaBay to chilling stories of human trafficking and cyber extortion, the dark web is a complex and dangerous place. Understanding these stories isn’t just about sensationalism; it’s about recognizing the challenges of this hidden world and the efforts needed to combat its dangers. As technology continues to evolve, so too will the dark web—and our response to it must evolve as well.
