How to Safely Access the Dark Web in 2025

If you've been an internet user for a decent period of time, you have likely heard of 'Dark Web'. The dark web has become a topic of intrigue especially amongst Gen Z, sparking curiosity for its hidden nature and controversial reputation. But while its secrecy may be alluring, stepping into this space unprepared can expose you to significant risks. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to safely accessing the dark web in 2024, ensuring you maintain security, anonymity, and legality.

What is the Dark Web?

The dark web is a part of internet that is mostly associated with illegal activities such as drug dealing, stealing personal data, hacking personal information and to even hire a hitman:=)

Yeah, it does get pretty dark, but the true purpose of the dark web is privacy. With privacy concerns being at the top of news headlines, lately I felt this is an opportune time to teach people how to safely access and use the dark web. While it has legitimate uses like promoting free speech in oppressive regimes, it’s also home to illegal activities, making privacy a priority.

Step 1: Know What You’re Getting Into

Before you access the dark web, make its purpose and content clear in your mind. While not entirely illegal, certain sites on dark web are illegal and unlawful resulting in severe consequences. So before getting into the world of dark web, you must research the laws of your country and make sure your actions remain within legal boundaries.

Step 2: Use a Secure and Reliable VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an essential layer of security by encrypting your internet connection and masking your IP address. Though they both provide encryption, a VPN and Tor are not the same thing. A VPN will restrain your ISP and anyone else from knowing that you're using a Tor browser. It will also help you to hide all the activities you're carrying out online.

Choose a reputable VPN provider that ensures your browsing remains private and secure by a no-log policy. Activate your VPN before logging into any Tor browser to avoid tracking of your online activities.

Recommended Features for Your VPN:

  • No-logs policy
  • Security and encryption
  • Good internet speed
  • Multi-device support
  • Simultaneous connection
  • High-speed servers

Step 3: Download the Tor Browser Safely

Tor (The Onion Router) is a free gateway to dark web, that enables anonymous browsing by routing your connection through a network of servers around the globe. Try downloading it exclusively from its official website to prevent from any malware or compromised software.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Make sure that you download the Tor Browser from its official site only and nowhere else to avoid any malicious software versions.
  • Always keep the dark web browser updated.
  • Avoid downloading files as they could compromise your anonymity.
  • Do not try to change its default settings.

Step 4: Create an Anonymous Identity

While browsing the dark web, never use your personal information. Create an entirely anonymous digital identity with:
  • Use disposable email accounts (e.g., ProtonMail).

  • Use Pseudonyms instead of real names.

  • Use strong, unique passwords for each account.

Step 5: Stick to Trusted Directories

The dark web is vast, and so is daunting to navigate through it due to its lack of centralized search engines and so even the most seasoned explorers can feel lost while navigating. It is really necessary to use trusted directories, here are few search engines specifically for this digital wilderness:
  • The Hidden Wiki: Categorized for easy and quick navigation, it is a directory to locate various dark web links. You can consider this as your encyclopedia for dark web.
While it's a useful starting point, not all links provided by The Hidden Wiki are trustworthy, some lead to illegal content. Always ensure to double check that you're accessing the legitimate Hidden Wiki, as there exists a few fraudulent copies.
  • Torch: Being one of the oldest engines on dark web, Torch has indexed thousands of onion pages. But make sure you use relevant precise keywords to filter out irrelevant and unsafe results.
  • DuckDuckGo: Well-known for its privacy-first approach, DuckDuckGo is a search engine that is also available on Tor network ensuring your anonymous internet searches.
  • Archive Today: Stuck on a website that is no longer available or missed out content which is no longer online? Archive Today is good to go in that case, as it provides to access valuable information without having to interact with potentially dangerous websites live.
  • The Intercept: For journalists seeking deep investigative pieces and confidential news, The Intercept has a presence on the dark web ensuring you can read without prying eyes.

Step 6: Maintain Operational Security (OpSec)

Operational Security (OpSec) is a practice of how you minimize digital and physical footprints of resulting in exposing your real identity. Ensuring anonymity and privacy is crucial on dark web, here are few ways you can ensure the same:
  • While logging into any account by an anonymous identity, make sure that the device you use for dark web is different from the one that you use for your personal work, this will minimize the risk of cross-contamination with your everyday internet use. This will compartmentalize your activities.
  • While using dark web, disable all tracking features by turning off location services and Bluetooth of your device. And clear your Tor browsing session after every use to avoid leaving any kind of cookies.
  • Never, I repeat never click on any unidentified link without verifying their sources. Always stick to safe directories with verified reputation.
  • Always run your VPN and Tor browser separately, by firstly running your VPN and then accessing Tor. This will add an extra layer of anonymity by hiding your Tor network from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • Avoid video calls, voice mails, and live chats and updates that could reveal your identity of some sort.
Opting for these standards of operational security will definitely help you to refrain from the risk of exposing your identity ensuring that you safely browse on the dark web.

Legal Considerations

While the dark web itself is not illegal, but there are a few illegal activities that can easily occur and interacting with certain types of content or unlawful transactions that can lead to prosecution. So firstly familiarize yourself with the type of content that is permissible in your jurisdiction and act accordingly.

Final Thoughts

The dark web’s anonymity and hidden content may intrigue the curious, but safety and legality should always be top priorities. By following this guide, you can minimize risks and explore the dark web responsibly. Red Light, Green Light...Red Light, Green Light....! Sounded fun when we all were a kid right? Honestly this was one of my favorite games when I was 6, but when I saw people playing this game on the Netflix show : Squid Game, it kinda became a nightmare for me. When Squid Game premiered on Netflix in 2021, it was much more than any other series. Shocking visuals, an intense plot might have caught the attention of everyone, but the undercurrent messages in it regarding society's plights, weight of history, and human resilience are the real diffe...
