The Butcher of Bareilly: How Kuldeep Kumar Gangwar Killed 9 Women in 14 Months

The women of Bareilly were disappearing. For over a year, fear gripped the villages. Between June 2023 and July 2024, nine women were found dead in sugarcane fields. Their bodies lay hidden among the tall stalks, their lives cruelly stolen by an unseen hand. The killer moved like a ghost, striking and vanishing without a trace. At first, the police thought these were isolated cases: a robbery gone wrong, a personal dispute, or an accident. But as the pattern emerged, a terrifying realization spread: a serial killer was on the loose. He had a signature strangulation, with the knots always tied to the left. He killed with precision, leaving behind no clues, no evidence. The people of Bareilly lived in fear, locking their doors before nightfall, whispering about the murderer who walked among them. Then, in July 2024, the police caught a man: Kuldeep Kumar Gangwar. When questioned, he simply smiled and confessed, "I killed six." But if he admitted to six, who killed the other thr...

India's Own Bermuda Triangle: The Puzzling Cases of the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans, a delta that spreads over India and Bangladesh, is where myth and reality intermingle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts very rich biodiversity- the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger; yet, there are mysteries it holds within its bosom, which have confounded the local people, explorers, and scientists for centuries. It's long been made somewhat of a Bermuda Triangle, to stories telling mysterious disappearances, ghostly lights, and supernatural legends, all of which have captivated and terrified for centuries: the Sundarbans.

The Sundarbans is the mangrove forest where the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers meet. It covers nearly 10,000 square kilometers and forms the world's largest mangrove forest. It develops a structure that is somehow like a mazed structure, less dangerous but beautiful at the same time. At the same time, the mangroves protect from cyclones and tidal surges but hide some secrets that are not possible for human eyes to fathom.

The Missing Fishermen: The Disappearances

Very few outsiders have entered the Sundarbans' waterways for a long time. Local fishermen often venture inside, and of those journeys that do not come back with fishermen, sometimes  the entire boat is retrieved without any loss, but still, all the boat's crew does not return with the boat.

Over such mystery disappearance, too, manhypothesesishase cropped up, from the naturalistic point of view to the belief the superstitions. Some are ascribing those mysterious disappearances to the region's wild powers. The Sundarbans have the Royal Bengal Tiger, an animal that strangely tends to kill humans. Tigers tend not to be man-eaters in other places, but there are known instances of man-eating tigers in

Sundarbans. One reason may be the low prevalence of prey animals or salt levels in the water, leading the tigers to behave like such. Sneaky predators that find themselves in deep forests or even creep close enough to the shoreline may feed on fishermen.

Still, not all such disappearances could be due to tiger attacks. The watercourses are labyrinthine, with fast currents and sandbanks shifting regularly. Small fishing boats can get capsized at the drop of a hat, and there may be no further trace of the crew. Yet, the horror of finding the boat empty and undamaged and all belongings remaining in it breeds speculation of supernatural involvement.

Local folklore accounts for the supernatural explanation. Spirit and god rule over the earth and waters have been some of the strongest tales and legends in Sundarbans. Of them, Bonbibi and Dakshin Rai are considered of extreme importance. Bonbibi is said to be a benevolent protector of the forest. Legend has it that she protects whoever enters the forest with good intentions, irrespective of his religion. Fishermen and honey collectors often perform rituals to honor Bonbibi before venturing into the forest to seek her protection against the dangers that lurk within.

Dakshin Rai is a type of evil spirit, usually portrayed as a tiger. The locals believe that this evil spirit lives off the offenders of the forest or its protective spirits. Another version among locals is that when people mysteriously disappear, Dakshin Rai has simply taken them because of a lack of good deeds or failure to take protection.

These are legends trying to depict respect in the world of nature and forces, which no one ever had seen. These unexplained phenomena were given the form of a presentation so that peace could be attained by the grieving.

The Aleya Lights: Ghostly Apparitions or Natural Phenomena?

One of the most mystifying and inexplicable phenomena reported in the Sundarbans is Aleya lights. They are said to hover above marshy lands, flickering in dark water and aiding people to their watery graves.

They differ in descriptions but generally come out as glowing balls that go away within the same flash of time. These stories of fishermen also connect with the fact that they are deceived by these lights to enter into the waters and, in this misdirection, are murdered in the killer marshes.

Some even claim that these lights are the specters of those fishermen who were murdered in the Sundarbans, who visit there to issue some sort of warning or to mislead the living. Aleya lights are scientifically accounted for by the phenomenon of burning methane gas.

Methane gas is produced due to decaying organic matter within the marshy environment surrounding the Sundarbans. If the gas turns out to surface and comes in contact with oxygen, the gas can start burning spontaneously; hence, fires are generated. This will briefly break into light, known as "will-o' -the-wisps" or " ignis fatuus." It has been recorded in various marshy regions all over the world and accounts for a plausible explanation of the Aleya lights.

However, this scientific explanation does little to dispel the fear and superstition surrounding the Aleya lights. The sudden appearance of these lights in an already perilous environment reinforces beliefs in supernatural forces.
